Carol Schoening (Haertel)

Carol Schoening (Haertel)

Carol Irene Haertel had a strong faith in God and went to see Christ on May 25, 2016, surrounded by her family and longtime friend.

Born March 10, 1947, to Ruth Irene Schoening and the late Raymond E. Schoening, she graduated from the nursing program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Carol married Tom on June 19, 1971, in Racine, WI and was a nurse at Akron City and Virginia Baptist Hospitals and taught natural childbirth classes. She directed choirs and played the piano at St. Thomas More Catholic and Timberlake Christian churches and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Jefferson Choral Society and a charter member of the Bells of the Blue Ridge. Carol was a Virginia Master Gardner and an avid gardener.

She loved shopping, especially on family trips back to Wisconsin, and eating out with friends and family. She will be mostly remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. The family would like to extend gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Lynchburg General and V.C.U. Hospitals and Centra Hospice.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her two sons, Thomas Raymond and Michael John Haertel; her brother, Stephen Schoening; mother-in-law, Dorothy Haertel; and grandparents.

Carol is survived by her husband, Thomas; her son, Jeffrey David Haertel and wife Lisa; her daughter, Rebecca Irene Harper and husband Jay; two grandchildren, Joseph Norwell Harper IV and Bailey Irene Harper; brother, John Schoening and wife Lucy; and brother-in-law, Jay Haertel.

A memorial service to celebrate Carol's life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Timberlake Christian Church with the Rev. Robert Mooty officiating.

I am so saddened by this news.  We had just reconnected at the 50th reunion. She had beautiful music talent and was such a lovely person. Prayers for comfort and peace for her family.
