Jack G Pankow

Jack G Pankow

Sandy Rashleger Tennant notified me that Jack Pankow had changed his name to Jon Hogle some time after we graduated.  He was a firefighter with the Racine Fire Department and lost his life while battling a fire.  I could not find an obituary, but found this article in the "Racine Journal-Times".

December 23, 2010. RACINE - Wednesday morning when Chicago firefighters learned they lost two of their own on a fire call, Racine firefighters knew exactly how they felt.

Thirty years ago on the same date, the Racine Fire Department lost two firefighters when the roof of a burning restaurant collapsed on them. The two firefighters, Clyde Carre and Jon Hogle, had been inside the restaurant fighting the blaze.

"They made the ultimate sacrifice for their city," said Racine Battalion Chief George Filber, adding the Chicago firefighters did the same.

The parallels between Wednesday's fire in Chicago and the one 30 years ago in Racine are startling. Aside from the date, both fires proved fatal after roof collapses and both fires claimed the lives of one veteran firefighter and a newer department addition.

Racine's Carre, 38 when he died, had been with the Racine Fire Department for 17 years. Hogle, 33, started with the department just five months before he died fighting the restaurant fire, an arson blaze that destroyed Taster's Choice, formerly at 1651 Grand Ave.

He had a wife, Linda Hogle, and a daughter, Brandy.    I worked with Linda at Case many years ago.    He was born on January 25, 1947.
