Richie, Dave Flannery, Dave Christman, and myself would get together quite often during our senior year, to play four-handed Sheepshead in Richie's basement.  Richie was always a gracious host and loser and I  remember those times fondly.  He fought his illnesses as best and as long as he could.

Richard was one of the golf boys of summer 1965 at the Washington Park course and remained a friend throughout his UW-Racine and UW-Madison years.  He had the unfortunate experience of being a member of the fraternity that also had two of the Madison bombers of 1970 as members.  He was detained and questioned extensively by the FBI after the bombing.  He told me that this was not a very pleasant experience (to say the least).  He was a quiet, unassuming, and a nice guy who was pretty stoic about his late-life medical problems.  While some (maybe most) of us have changed appearance through the years, Richard still looked amazingly like his high school picture when I saw him at the 50th and 70th reunions.

I recall him as a quiet person, unassuming but friendly none the less. We are all aging and messages such as this are bound to  continue yet we carry on.  Don Piggins
