Barbara “Barb” Jean Salvo (née Kemnitz), age 79, born July 29, 1947, in Erie, Pennsylvania to Warren and Eleanor (Besitzky) Kemnitz, entered the fullness of God’s eternal care on July 30, 2026. A beloved wife, godmother, aunt, sister-in-law, mentor, educator, dog mom, and friend, Barb lived a life woven through with faith, devotion, curiosity, and love.
Barb was the cherished wife of John Salvo. They were united in marriage on August 24,1968 at Atonement Lutheran Church in Racine, Wisconsin. He was her partner in every joy and every season of life. Their story began in the Washington Park High School choir, where two young voices found harmony long before they knew how beautifully their lives would intertwine. From those early days of shared music, grew a marriage marked by steadfast companionship, gentle humor, and a home filled with warmth. Together, Barb and John delighted in caring for the many pups who accompanied them through the years, each one receiving Barb’s signature blend of affection, patience, and playfulness.
A lifelong learner and gifted educator, Barb graduated from UW–Madison in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and went on to shape generations of students with her passion for discovery. She taught Science with excellence and imagination at Washington Park High School and Carthage College, inspiring countless young people to see the world with curiosity and wonder. Her contributions reached far beyond the classroom: Barb wrote Science curriculum for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and her impact on the field was recognized with an honorary doctorate from Ripon College in 1991. She was a mentor to student teachers, a guide to colleagues, and a steady, encouraging presence to all who learned beside her.
Barb’s faith was the quiet, steady heartbeat of her life. She was a devoted and active member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, a congregation she absolutely cherished. Over the decades Barb served in many and various roles including Music and Worship Chair, Council President, Master of the Sound Booth, a joyful member of the Senior Choir and Bell Choir, along with many others. She offered her gifts with humility and delight, always seeking to strengthen the worship life of the church she loved so dearly.
Her life was also full of simple joys: cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers, sewing beautiful creations, bowling with friends, and spending time with the people who meant the world to her. Barb’s warmth, intelligence, and quiet strength made her a treasured presence in every circle she touched.
Barb will be profoundly missed by her husband, John Salvo; siblings-in-law, Jean (John) Gandee and Nick Thielen; nieces and nephews, Jana (Jimmy) Schultz, Jolie (Matt) Maletis, Kelly Thielen, and Kim Gleason; her beloved godfamily, Wendy (Mike) Farrell, Ryan (Stephanie) Farrell, Kyle (Tina) Farrell, Tyler (Danielle) Farrell, Katy (Adam) Schuls, and the children Declan, Juniper, Asher, Nora, and Jozie; close friends Nancy (Art) Justus, Steve Ricketts, Margaret Oliver, Marilyn McGoldrick, Kate Potter-Barrow, Linda Greening, Gregg (Kylee) Albright, Chris (Shannon) Porcaro, and many other dear friends and family who carry her memory with tenderness.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Eleanor Kemnitz, her step-mother, Jane Kemnitz and sister-in-law, Marilynn Thielen.
A funeral honoring Barb’s life will be held at Holy Communion Lutheran Church on Monday, August 17, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Barb lived with a faith that welcomed, a mind that inspired, and a heart that loved without hesitation. Her legacy endures...in her family, her students, her church, and in all whose lives were brightened by her presence.

Barb and I were good friends since the start of high school. Our last names being Kayon and Kemnitz put us together from gym locker partners to chemistry lab partners and more.
We both loved science, but while I had the gusto, especially for biology, she had the brains for it all!
Our senior year we made a deal. If she could get me through chemistry with a passing grade, I would get her a date with a basketball player. I won that one..... (the player will go unnamed at this point).
HOWEVER, she fell in love with this guy named John Salvo, and look how long that lasted!
Barb and I roomed together at UW, took classes in geology, Italian, and anatomy together..... but where she stayed with science, I veered off to be an English major.
Miraculously we both ended up teaching at Park High School together for several years. And, I made sure all three of our sons had her for biology at Park, too.
Even though I went on to administration, we often met for lunches, she attended our sons' weddings, and we continually shared our devotion to education and our interest in the magical diversity of the workings of students' minds.
Early on we shared students who were on her science teams at Park....and she did amazing , award winning, work with those teenagers. She was recognized as National Teacher of the Year for her marvelous efforts.
And very fittingly, she was inducted into Park High's Hall of Fame early on.
Barb waa so proud to be a teacher, and spent many years after retirement from RUSD as a professor at Carthage College. So many students and student teachers benefitted from her guidance and passion for her work. Yep, she wrote lessons and science information for a national publishing company too...wow!
These last three years, Barb fought cancer and more with a clear mind, a partnership with each doctor, and a knowledge of every treatment. We talked almost daily and she shared every detail with me because there is a part of me that wished I had been a doctor. She honored me by saying I would have made a good one. I sure wished I had had the magic to make it all easier for her, but I knew listening and cheerleading for her was what I could do.
Recently we talked about being "sisters".....hmmm, imagine that, a blessing that began at Park High School simply because our last names started with the letter "k".
As you can tell, I loved her deeply, and I still do.
So, this is my wish: as the Irish saying goes, "Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of HIs hand".
Rest, my dear friend., rest......and blessings always.

I knew Barb from our church, Park A Cappela choir, and several classes together. I enjoyed singing with the A Cappela group she organized at our 50th class reunion. She was a classy, bright, and wonderful person. I am saddened to learn of her death. Best wishes to John to carry on without her. She will be missed by MANY.

So sad to read that another renowned classmate has passed. I didn't know Barb well in high school, but her participation in the 50th reunion surely made up for that. Barb was so excited about leaving a (one) scholarship from our large class. With her help and that of many others we raised almost $20,000 and handed out 19 scholarships valued at $1965 each. Kudos for her help and encouragement. John you are in my prayers.
